How to add item to an existing selection layer


I have a selection layer of about 150 properties in ArcGIS ArcMap, and I want to add one more building to it (see image, area outlined in red circle). The problem is that I missed this building in particular when I clicked to add all the buildings one-by-one originally.

When I click on it using the Selection Interactive tool to add it to the selection, I can't seem to make it a part of the existing selection layer called "LargeBuilding selection" (nor can I change its color to green).

I am relatively new to ArcGIS.


As far as I know, there's no way to add features to a layer created by selection. The easiest thing to do is select all the features that went into that layer, add the ones you want by manual selection or using Select by Attributes/Location with a 'add to current' method (see my answer at this question for working with active selections), and then create a new layer based on the updated selection to replace the incorrect one.

  1. On the top menu bar, choose Selection > Select by Location.
  2. In the Select by Location dialog, set the following: selection method - select features from, Target - LargeBuilding, Source - LargeBuilding Selection, spatial selection method… - are identical to. Click Ok.
  3. That should select all 150 buildings in the original layer that you saved to the selection layer. Using the interactive selection (Select Features button on the Tools toolbar) and holding shift, click the building you want to add in the LargeBuilding layer. This should add it to the selection. Make sure you don't click anywhere else or clear the current selection (of the other buildings) when you do this or you have to repeat those steps.
  4. Right-click the LargeBuilding layer and choose Selections > Create Layer from Selection as you did the first time to create a new layer based on the updated selection.

The alternative to this method is to add your own field to the LargeBuildings layer. You can then use that field to signify however many groups or whatever you want (in or out, set1 or set2 or set3). You can add multiple copies of the same layer and put definition queries on each so that it only shows features with a particular value in that field. With this method, whenever you edit that attribute it will automatically appear/disappear from the definition queried layer when you save the edits and you don't have to worry about selections at all. This could also be done on an existing attribute field if there's one in particular that identifies the ones you're manually selecting. By doing it with an attribute, you don't have to worry about recreating a selection to subset or modify a subset - it's stored as an attribute.

Go to the site where you want to add a page.

Go to the home page of the site.

Select + New, and then select Page.

Alternately, you can go to an existing page, select + New, and select Start from a blank page. Or, you can choose Copy of this page to create a new page that has the same web parts and content as the existing page.

Add a page name in the title area. A page name is required to save the page. See the Customize the title area.

Hover your mouse below the title area and you'll see a line with a circled +, like this:

Click + to add content like text, documents, video and more. To learn more about how to find and use web parts, see Using web parts.

You can also add sections and columns to a page. To learn more, see Add sections or columns on a page.

When you're done editing, you can click Save as draft to save your changes and close edit mode. Your audience won't see the page until you publish it. Only people with edit permissions on your site will be able to see it.

When you are ready for your audience to see the page, click Publish.

  1. Verify that you are signed in and have privileges to create content.
  2. Open the map in Map Viewer , click Details , and click Contents .
  3. Browse to the sublayer that contains the features you want to label, click More Options , and click Create Labels .
  4. Check the Label Features box if it is not already checked.
  5. Do one of the following to specify the label text:
    • From the Text drop-down menu, select a field value to use as your label. You can also type static text instead of or in addition to the field value.
    • To use a custom Arcade expression that has been created for the layer, select it at the bottom of the Text drop-down menu. If you want to edit the expression or its name, click the Edit Expression button and use the editor window to edit it.
    • If you want to create a new Arcade expression, select New Expression from the Text drop-down menu and use the editor window to create your expression, including giving it a name. You can use existing expressions to build new expressions, but be aware that certain variables may not work across profiles. To use an existing expression, select it from the Existing tab in the editor window.

From the Experience Gallery click Create new to open the template gallery.

The template gallery contains the default templates, as well as templates that you’ve created, those shared with you, and public templates.

Summary & tips

A custom basemap gallery can be useful for a variety of reasons. Since the basemap determines the projection of the map, you can add basemaps that support your local projection standard.

A custom gallery also provides flexibility. For example, rather than use Esri’s predefined Living Atlas basemap collection, you can build your own gallery by choosing from available Living Atlas basemaps. You can also use the Style Editor to craft your own unique basemaps based on Esri vector basemaps. Or, author your own basemaps using unique layers published by your organization.

When making your own basemaps, ensure that the maps and all layers are shared publicly. Set the delete protection to ensure that your maps and layers are not inadvertently deleted.


Change owner

Default administrators and those with the correct privileges can change the owner of items in the organization. You can transfer all items owned by specific members, or change the ownership of specific items in the organization.

Changing layer ownership changes ownership of the file from which the layer was created. When you change the owner of a hosted feature layer, ownership changes for its dependent hosted feature layer views.

Changing the owner of a layer does not change the owner of the maps and scenes in which the layer is used. Similarly, changing the owner of maps and scenes does not change the ownership of the layers inside them, nor does it change the owner of the apps in which the maps and scenes are used.

Transfer all content owned by specific members

You can transfer content owned by one or more organization members to another member of your organization. Transferring all content in bulk to a new owner is useful when you need to delete members but want to keep their content in the organization.

  1. Verify that you are signed in as a default administrator or custom role with administrative privileges to reassign ownership of content.
  2. At the top of the site, click Organization and click the Members tab.
  3. Search for members by name or user name and apply filters to narrow the members list. Optionally, sort the list, such as by name or last login date.
  4. Check the box next to each of the members whose content items you want to transfer.

You can select up to 100 members at a time. The selected set is maintained while you search and filter all the members in your organization, even across multiple pages. If necessary, click the members selected drop-down menu to review and revise your selection once you've modified your initial search or filter.

You can search for members by name or user name to narrow the members list.

  • Folder for each previous owner —Transferred items are stored in separate folders named for each of the current item owners. Enter a specific prefix for each folder name, or accept the default prefix of from . For example, entering hosted layers for the prefix creates folders named hosted layers_[previous owner's username] , where [previous owner's username] is the name of the member from whom the content is being transferred.
  • Only one folder —Transferred items are all stored in a single folder. Select or create a folder, or keep the default folder.

Before clicking Transfer , you can review the list of items being transferred by clicking the View all items button under Content to transfer .

The items are transferred to the new owner you specified.

Change the ownership of specific items

You can change the ownership of specific items in the organization in bulk. This is useful when you have a large number of items owned by different organization members that you want to reassign to a new owner.

You can manage content owned by a specific member, including reassigning their content to another member, from the Members tab of the organization page.

  1. Verify that you are signed in as a default administrator or custom role with administrative privileges to reassign ownership of content.
  2. At the top of the site, click Content , and click the My Organization tab.
  3. Use the filters, sort options, and search as needed to find the items to reassign.
  4. Select the items and click Change Owner .
  5. In the Change owner window, search for and select a new item owner, and select or create a folder as needed.
  6. Click Save .

The items are reassigned to the new owner you specified.

In the general provisions
